Milan, Italy – May 21, 2024 – The Brera Art Gallery is thrilled to announce the opening of its latest exhibition, "Paralel Encounters – AI redesigns Brera," a captivating opera celebrating the beauty, spirituality, and innovation of Renaissance art. The exhibition will be open to the public from June 19 to October 30, 2024.
"Parallel Encounters" brings to Brera an opera as it has never been seen, transformed with the help of artificial intelligence to imagine the renaissance art living into our era. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore the intersection of art, religion, culture and technology during one of the most transformative periods in art history.
The highlight is "The Annunciation" by Il Francia, a masterful depiction of the angel Gabriel's divine message to the Virgin Mary, but as if it would happen in our times. This work, originally known for its meticulous detail, harmonious composition, and profound emotional depth, exemplifies now how the world we live in shifts faster than we realise.
Inspiration- "Annunciazione"
Il Francia
This picture was painted at the peak of the artist’s success at the Gonzaga court in Mantua. It captures the pivotal moment in Christian theology when the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will give birth to Jesus, the son of God. In terms of composition, Il Francia's Annunciation adheres closely to the traditional iconography of the subject matter, having a center-focused composition, static and flattened, with the charcters pictuerd with the characteristic perfect pale skin and shining aura. One notable aspect of his interpretation, though, is his meticulous attention to detail and precision in rendering the architectural elements. This architectural backdrop not only serves as a stage for the celestial encounter but also evokes a sense of grandeur and solemnity befitting the sacred nature of the scene. Gabriel and the Virgin Mary is imbued with a sense of grace and serenity. The subtle interplay of light and shadow further accentuates the ethereal quality of the figures, lending them an almost supernatural presence.

The purpose
What if The Announciation happened in our times?
Bringing the scene into our era would mean probably loosing some of its substance. The context would not be that solemn and simple anymore, but a conglomerate of elements that catches our eye and doesn't let us focus on the depth of any subject, treating all of them superficially.
About
"Parallel Encounters" is the artwork inspired by Il Francia's "Annunciazione". The scene is now brought into a modern world, even science-fiction context with skyscrapers popping into the background. If the renaissance backdrop of the original gives a solemnity to the scene, the perspective is now more agressive, complex and draws the attention from the holy scene. The main characters are still keeping their position in the picture, even though they have lost their holy spirit and are now depicted as normal humble people.
The light also plays an important role in the scene, as it represents the only divine element. Virgin Mary is standing solemnly under a spot of light, as she is about to become the future mother of God's son, while Gabriel is gratefully kneeling facing her lightened aura. But is that enough to catch attention and emotion in our constant moving insensitive world?
Overall, the picture was transformed into a more dynamic scene. The foreground of the announciation scene competes with the modern crowded background, as the spirituality fades away while being chased by nowadays superficial society. Where is the focus? What is the main subject? Or are we trying to chase too many things at once?

Prompt
Archangel Gabriel dressed in dark clothes stands kneeling in front of virgin Mary facing the camera, both of them wearing normal clothes. A dove flies towards them while Gabriel points delicately at humble Mary. The scene has multiple busy running people in the background full of skyscrapers, behind the renaissance porticos where the protagonists are standing.
